  The Newsletter

Hello!

April for me began in County Mayo, on Clew Bay, Croagh Patrick at L'Heure Bleu in my favourite place in the world - and ended in County Wicklow. I am in Wicklow because of a stable girl’s broken ankle – but the story is too long and too complicated to go into. Suffice to say, I am stuck here at the bottom of the Sugarloaf Mountain for three weeks with no car, and a visit to the local service station to pick up basics and the Irish Times is about as exciting as it gets. So clearly, with absolutely no news to impart, this newsletter will be very short. However, the upside of living in the sticks is that I'm getting lots of work done.

(To make up for the paucity of news, I’ve decided to hold a competition this month.

The prize is an audio book worth £45.95. For details, see below.)

OPEN DOOR

I’m working hard on the edit of a novel I wrote last year for the Open Door series. Open Door is the brain child of New Island books - who published my first novel in Ireland - and bestselling author Patricia Scanlon. Patricia is a great champion of adult literacy, and she’s had huge success with this project, having persuaded authors as diverse as Roddy Doyle and Marian Keyes to come up with short, readable novels for people with reading difficulties. The Open Door series is, in effect, a labour of love, since all the writers who have contributed have waived their Irish copyright fee – and I'm very chuffed to be included.

QUIET QUARTERS

Some months ago I wrote and recorded five short pieces for the Lyric FM daily Quiet Quarter series, about letters written by my grandmother in the aftermath of the First World War. Because the readings needed two separate narrative voices, I roped my daughter, Clara, in to help me – I thought it was a rather nice conceit to have her ‘play’ her own great grandmother on the radio. Check out Lyric FM for the podcast. It should be added to the webpage soon.

COMPETITION!

OK. The competition.

The prize is an unabridged audio book of my last novel but one, Sex, Lies and Fairytales, narrated by your truly.

THANK YOU

As ever, heartfelt thanks go to all of you who have written in the recent past. I religiously answer all the letters that come in to kate@kate-thompson.com, but sometimes my replies get mailer-daemoned. So apologies to anyone who hasn’t heard back from me – especially to TD, with thanks for the lovely compliment! ☺

By the way, while Sex, Lies and Fairytales is available to buy or to order in all good bookshops in Ireland, the UK and the Commonwealth, its companion piece Hard to Choos is available to buy direct from booksellers only in Ireland at present. Should you wish to buy the book from Amazon, clicking here will take you straight to the sales point. You can also order Hard to Choos from Pixie's site. Lots of you are wondering where my backlist can be purchased. Amazon is good, of course, but my Transworld titles are also available - with free P&P in the UK - at Bookpost. (Just key in the title name in inverted commas - ie: "More Mischief")
